Dam Square

During the sixties flower power in the Netherlands was symbolized by the famous Damslapers, a 'bunch of hippies' camping out on Dam square. Nowadays the square has lost a lot of it's former easygoing charm, but it's still one of the points of interest in the city. Dam square is the physical center of the city ever since the dam was built to keep the Zuiderzee (Southern sea) out. In the middle of the square is the National Monument, dedicated to all victims of war throughout the world. The west side of the square is flanked by the Royal Palace

friendly staff, good location and even though it is a relatively small hotel, it has an elevator. excellent dinner menu. i had to leave early, (06.45) but the night porter made sure i had some breakfast and made me some coffee. this is the second time i have stayed here, and i highly recommend this hotel.

some of the rooms were really hot and bad air. no airconditioning as many other hotels in amster. could have freshened up a bit, but absolutely a descent hotel

it was in center of city, you go out of the hotel and you are in the centre of city.all important sight seeings are nearby

i thing it will be better to change bed and towels for the bathroom every day but especially it could be better to take more care for the breakfast.

housekeeping banging on door 5 times at 10.30am to tell us to leave when we had a reservation for following night- told staff each time we where in house for another night and still they continued to knock and very rudely told us check out was 11am that day!!!! also on check out restaurant staff pushing past and generally making us feel in the way for trying to check out! hairdryer borrowed from reception was faulty- sparks flew out when in operation and when reception was informed the gent thought this to be funny!!! not a great impression overall to be honest but fabulous location.

the location is very strategic with cosy bar cum dinner.

1. the kitchen area is open & too close to the dinning area hence the food smell doesnt go away fromthe dinner area. 2. the carpet in the guest room is too old, with patches all over, if changed it will give the rrom a much cleaner and cosier outlook. 3. double duvets should be provided in the double room seemingly as the bed is a double bed and not single. 4. the wall top wall of the shower room needs some maintainance work.

the housekeeping was very consistent, everything was clean, not too noisy if your room is in the back, the location is good (close to the train station and trams), and the staff were friendly. despite the shortcomings i think it is a good choice if you are traveling on a budget.

a very narrow staircase (basically a ladder from the 5th to the 6th floor); the fire alarm went off for 10 seconds or so one night, and if it had been a real fire im not sure what would have happened, no fire escapes or anything; you have to walk through a tourist restaurant to get to the stairway (well, at least they let you know that up front); hot water failed several times; there was no wifi as advertised; the elevator was out of service; they deactivate your card-key every day so you have to ask to get it reactivated every night, and they played bad loud music in the morning for breakfast.

the twin room had tiny window facing a wall, with kitchen funnel right underneath it. the smell from the kitchen and the noise from the funnel were unbearable. manager collected cancelation fee in the sum of full nights stay after departure from the hotel one day earlier than was previously booked.

the service should not stay in the entree - to make "street promotion" and speek to people directly - to get them into the hotel. this is not a serios style!
