Canals

You can go anywhere in Holland, and never be far from a canal. These waterways are as beautiful as they are practical. Holland canals serve a number of very important purposes. First they were used to drain the land so homes and farms could be established where once there was water. Second they provide a means of transport for goods from inland regions to the sea. Third they are homesteads for thousands who live on houseboats. Houseboats are very trendy and can be seen on most canals in Amsterdam. Some are available for rent, however they have become very expensive due to their popularity.

Next, the canals are used for recreation (boating) and for parades. One of the most popular canal parades is Amsterdam's Gay Pride parade that attracts more than 100,000 spectators straining to see nearly naked men cavorting on gaily decorated floats. A must do if you're in town! Last, the Dutch canals act as sewers for many houseboats, getting flushed out at regular intervals. But for most people they are part of the Dutch landscape and a beautiful example of human ingenuity and a great conductor of feng shui (wind & water). Amsterdam's canals have another bonus, hundreds of bridges! Spanning the centuries as well as the canals, bridges provide a glimpse into Amsterdam's past, and make wonderful observation points for photographing the city or just watching the boats go by. At night many are lit up and make a beautiful circular reflection in the water below.

Hotel Sint Nicolaas is a small 2 star hotel with 27 lovely rooms, centrally located at only 150 metres from Amsterdam Central Station. From the hotel it takes just a short, pleasant walk to find oneself in the most charming canal surroundings packed up with many Dutch tourist attractions. All rooms have large doubleglazed windows facing the street. No innercourt rooms. The Hotel is situated in an old monumental building, which in the 18th and 19th century was used as an office building for the companies situated on the old harbour front.Till the end of the 19th century in stead of streets surrounding the building, there were three canals. In 1984 the last companies left the neighbourhood and their old warehouses were converted into apartments. The round office building became a hotel with 20 rooms and an apartment for the owner on the top floor. Now Hotel Sint Nicolaas is, for our regular guests, the place to stay when they visit Amsterdam again and again. First time guests are most times pleasantly surprised by the friendly and informal family atmosphere. In combination with the warm decoration style we welcome a lot of them for a second time stay.

Single Room

This must be the smallest and cutest room in the hotel! It is on the top floor, right under the roof so you will not find a regular ceiling here. The side wall is also the room’s ceiling and that gives this room its unique atmosphere. A small window faces the tops of the buildings and the sky, which makes it the best way to check on Amsterdam’s unstable weather. If you need time alone with your thoughts – that’s the best place to be in! All romantic diary-writers will love this room!

There is a small, private bathroom with shower cabin and toilet here – big enough just for one person. There is also a TV, direct-dial phone, mini safe and wireless internet connection in the room.
