For both casual visitor and long-term resident alike, Amsterdam has one great advantage above all others: its size. The compact nature of the town makes it eminently negotiable, especially if you're prepared to take your life into your hands and rent a bike for the duration of your stay. And even if you're not, then the city's layout means you'll likely never be much more than a half-hour's walk from wherever you're heading, with the tram system providing back-up if you don't fancy the exertion.
