History and The Legend Kaatje
HISTORY: The present day hotel “Kaatje’s Résidence” was built around 1860 as a private house. From 1926 it was used by a company specialising in animal feed. Then, after years of standing empty it was converted into a hotel, ‘Kaatje bij de Sluis’. In 2005 the hotel was completely modernised and continues now under the name “Kaatjes Résidence”.
The legend of Kaatje
Kaatje was the daughter of Brecht, the innkeeper of “In den Gouden Walvisch” (In the Golden Whale) When she was only 18, her mother died and she took over the running of the inn, proving herself a perfect hostess as well as a talented cook. The love of her life was Hilbert, a sea captain, but alas they were not destined to be happy together. Kaatje was attacked , robbed and died of her wounds – just before Hilbert returned , a prosperous man, from his last voyage. Kaatje’s recipe books were also taken in the robbery and afterwards, recipes that can be attributed to her regularly turned up in the towns around the Zuiderzee. A statue of Kaatje stands opposite the hotel.

- cafe met bonkmuziek aan de overkant; koelkast met drankjes op de kamer was prettig geweest, we kwamen laat terug na voorstelling
