Horst aan de Maas
The municipality of Horst aan de Maas to which Broekhuizen belongs consists of 10 villages. Horst, the centre of the municipality, is located on the west bank of the River Meuse (Maas). Broekhuizen is easily accessible by road, with the River Maas forming one of its boundaries. On our back doorstep, the Maas ferry bustles to and from Arcen, the village linking the region to the Maasduinen area.
The Maashotel and its gardens lie on the banks of the Maas, where for centuries it has been a beacon for men and ships. Here too is the statue of St Christopher (created by Mathieu Knippenberg) whose footprint can also be found on the opposite side of the river, as if he had crossed the river in search of the good life. The quaint houses, the cobbled streets and the decorative gothic church with its belfry give Broekhuizen its charming, unique character. At the edge of the village, the road continues through a nature reserve called ‘Het Schuitwater’, an area of swamp forest and meadows, while Lottum, the Rose Village of the Netherlands, marks the southern boundary of Broekhuizen. Here millions of roses provide a fabulous display of colour. To the north is its sister village of Broekhuizenvorst with its beautiful medieval squares, gables and the restored parish church. Together with Castle Ooijen, they conjure up images of yesteryear.
