History of the Gilde Hotel
In 1751 the building was a Roman-Catholic vicarage.
The church was situated at the right flank of the current hotel.
The sisters of Congregation of Love found a nursery- and sewingschool in 1856.
Soon the work expanded to the help of poor and sick people.
Meanwhile the block fullfilled more and more the task as an hospital.
In 1896 the new-building started in the Nieuwstraat.
The former church and residence were pulled down. Instead a hospital was built, which opened in 1897.
Ever since 1958 the “Foundation Care for Elderly St. Lebuinus” was established in the Nieuwstraat.
In the subsequent period the building served as a reception centre for old-warriors of the former Dutch East Indie and untill 1996 as home help.
Since 1998 the Gilde Hotel is established in the historical premises.
From october 2006 Sandton Hotels is in charge of the current affairs.
