Surroundings of Gent
The Architecture of Gent and other sights:
Much of the city's medieval architecture remains intact and is remarkably well preserved and restored. Its center is the largest carfree area in Belgium. Interesting highlights are the Saint Bavo Cathedral with the Ghent Altarpiece, the belfry, the Gravensteen castle, and the splendid architecture along the old Graslei harbour. Ghent established a nice blend between comfort of living and history – it is not a city-museum. The city of Ghent houses also three béguinages and numerous churches, among which the Saint-Jacobs church and the Saint-Nicolas Church are the most beautiful examples. There is an opera house and a few theatres. Highlights of modern architecture are the university buildings (the Boekentoren or Book Tower) by Henry Van de Velde.
The beguinages, as well as the belfry and adjacent cloth hall, were recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites in 1998 and 1999.
As most Belgian cities, Ghent offers a rich variety of local and foreign cuisine. Especially the quarter called "Patershol" has a concentration of restaurants. The "Sleepstraat" a little bit further north houses a bunch of Turkish restaurants and food bars.
In Ghent and other regions of East-Flanders, bakeries sell a donut-shaped bun called a "mastel". "Mastellen" are also called "Saint Hubert bread", because on the Saint's feast day, which is 3 November, the bakers bring their batches to the early Mass to be blessed. Traditionally, it is thought that blessed mastellen immunize against rabies.

- schoon, ruime kamers met goede faciliteiten
- ontbreken safe in onze kamer, echter in kamer van mede reisgenoten wel. afstand tot centrum iets te ver, 20 min lopen. communicatie over creditcard afschrijving. communicatie over lazy sunday check out. we hadden moeten doorgeven dat we hiervan gebruik wilde maken, echter staat dit nergens beschreven.

- leiggig tav centrum is goed, personeel behulpzaam.
- wij hadden onze kamer ge up-grade en kregen een grotere kamer, maar helaas zijn wij geschrokken van het toilet op deze kamer. de bril was aan de binnezijde zo geel van de urine ( ingebeten door jaren lange slechte onderhoud ) rond om de toilet zaten urinevlekken in de vloer ingebeten dat schoonmaken geen zin meer heeft. wij hebben de manager aan gesproken en zij heeft ons een andere kamer toegewezen. ook op deze kamer is het sanitair niet fris, bril zat los ronde spiegel aan de wand defect, glazen deur viel steed dicht zodar je te weinig plaats had om te douchen of hij viel helemaal open waardoor alles nat werdt. de manager heeft ons voor het ongemak wel een drankje aangeboden, maar dit hebben wij nooit gekregen en er naar vragen doen wij niet. wijn advies zou zijn, laat regelmatig iemand de kamers controleren en reparaties uitvoeren of vernieuwingen aanbrengen, zodat in de toekomst het toilet weer fris ruikt en je niet over je nek gaat van de gele urine aan de onderkant van de wc bril.

- nette mooi kamers, lekker bedje.
- klein minpuntje was het douchegordijn wat op drie-kwart van het bad hing ipv. aan de rand, waardoor de ruimte om te douchen erg klein was.
