IJsselstein is a small city in the province of Utrecht and was founded in the 11th century. It is one of the few places of pilgrimage in The Netherlands. In the 14th century someone found a Madonna statue in a field here and on this exact spot a chapel was built. Besides the tower of castle 'Steijne aan de IJssel' visitors can also still see remnants of the old city wall and town gates. In the quiet nature one can walk and bike through the meadows and woods, and along the water.
