The garden

The hands on the clock tick away the hours. They make today out of yesterday, tomorrow from today. Sometimes, however, the time allows us to glimpse back because it is not important for a while. Then it seems as though the years have not passed by, speed seems unnecessary, and carefree enjoyment is a normal way of life. The Havixhorst has not been disturbed by time. The driveway, the moat, the courtyard, the stately house, they have always been there. Even the storks return each year to their high nest on the chimney. The Havixhorst is timeless.

Deep in the middle ages, local "Drentse" farmers established themselves on the sandy horsts along the small Reest river. One of those old farmhouses soon surpassed the others in power and status: The Havixhorst. In 1753, the old knight's manor was transformed into the small palace on the Reest like it still looks now. In 1982, the rejuvenation of The Havixhorst began. A splendid past was brought up to the standards of today's guests by manager Jos A.C. Wijland. We offer you a warm welcome at The Havixhorst...

From the pillow on the bed to the tiles in the bathroom. All eight have their own atmosphere, their own history. And where in the world can you find a bridal suite right under the nest of a pair of storks?

Anyone who comes to lodge at The Havixhorst is not a 'room number'. The word lodging alone already recalls pleasant memories of a distant past here.

Lodging at the Havixhorst means a couple of days as the guest of the house. A stroll in the castle garden and through the stately seclusion of the Reest valley, a relaxed candlelight dinner, a drink or two in the lounge. Or dining outside on the terrace on one of those warm summer evenings and then enjoying the peace of the night.
The table impeccably laid out, the porcelain in which you can see your reflection, the silver spotlessly polished, the glasses crystal clear, the flowers fresh from the garden. The ambiance, the table, the service, everything is perfect. In such surroundings, you could almost forget something: the food at The Havixhorst is unbelievably tasty. In a short time, the restaurant has managed to conquer a place for itself among the top Dutch restaurants.

Here in the Drentse countryside we work as much as possible with local ingredients. Potatoes and vegetables are cultivated specially for The Havixhorst, the wild game comes from the region, and the herbs come from our own castle garden. It is these 'small details' that make The Havixhorst's menu literally and figuratively exclusive. Exclusive and always surprisingly new thanks to the creativity of our kitchen staff.
