History of the Hotel

1850-1860: Building of the Neo Classisism Hotel Des Flandres at the Vlaanderenstraat in Ostende, one of the most important hotels in the city center of Ostende.. The hotel has a central gate to the spacious courtyard behind with stables.

Ca 1891: building of a new building, the eclectic Hotel Leopold II, the present Hotel George V, also at the Vlaanderenstraat with a shopping galerie and cafes. The gallery Leopold II at the place of the origin centerplace. The hotel Leopold II, as shown on the painting “Music in the Vlaanderenstraat” (1891) of the well known Ostend painter James Ensor, takes again de former central entrance but now as entrance for the gallery with the same name.

1928: enlargement of het galerie Leopold II to the Christinastraat, where an appartmentbuilding (Christinastraat 24-28) was build in style Art Deco.

1945 the architect A.J. Vanden Berghe (Brussels) replace the glass cap by a dome of glass tiles in order of the NV Oostende Littoral.

In the course of 1946-1953: de shops were renovated according to the trends at that period, until 1947 this was done by architect AJ Vanden Berghe. Later, it was actualised.

1954 changing of the so called street of glass to The James Ensor Gallery.

Numbers 10, 42. Originally the ‘Hotel Leopold II’, now the ‘Hotel George V’ (Vlaanderenstraat nr 42b) with shops and cafés on the ground floor. The entrance of the James Ensor gallery was centralised.

2008 take over of the former hotel George V by Mr Didier De Weerdt and Mr Pascal De Gryse. The hotel is fully renovated and the name changed into Hotel Albert II Oostende.
