Oosterhout is a city since 1809, when King Lodewijk Napoleon gave her that status. But the place Oosterhout exists much longer. The history of the place Oosterhout goes even way beyond the year 1.000 BC!
Today it is a vivid and modern city. The heart of the city is dominated by the Basilica of Saint John, situated on de Markt ("the Marketplace"). The streets around the Basilica all come together in a intimate spot of shops, pubs and restaurants. At the other side you will find the Kerkstraat ("Churchstreet"), a street which has been establihed as a promenade with many shops, ending in the partially covered shopping mall "Arendshof".
In the totally renovated centre, the old and the new are blend in complete harmony. A good example can be seen in the 16th century Basilica of Saint John and the complex with the Golden Tulip Hotel Oosterhout and Theatre de Bussel; completely different, but neighbours without a trace of disharmony.
Also very attractive for the visitors are the surroundings of Oosterhout, with its forrests.
