Roermond, the historic Hanse city, also boasts a rich history. There was already a settlement on the Roer in Roman times. Over the centuries, the settlement attained city status, became the capital of the Overkwartier Gelre (Upper Quarter of Gelderland), then joined the Hanseatic League and also became a religious centre. The remnants of its chequered history determine the appearance of this beautiful historic city today.
On the Munsterplein there is the 13th century Munsterkerk (Church of Our Lady). The St. Christoffelkathedraal (St. Christopher's Cathedral) on the market square is a Gothic basilica dating from 1410. A gilded statue of the city's patron saint, St. Christopher was added to the tower in 1957.
