Surroundings

Roosendaal
Roosendaal is located between Antwerp and Rotterdam. The surroundings are rich in scenic beauty. Together with the neighbouring communities of Wouw, Wouwse Plantage, Moerstraten, Heerle, and Nispen, Roosendaal has about 76,000 inhabitants. The community is surrounded by woods and nature reserves, ideal for walking and cycling. Roosendaal has three enclosed shopping centres, a pleasant town centre with many bars and restaurants, sports centres, a theatre and several museums. Each year many sporting and recreational events take place.

Tongerloplein
This square, where the hotel is located on a corner, is next to St. Jan church. On the other side is “De Kring” theatre, the location where there was a conventicle in 1672. The carnival symbol “De Tullepetaon” is on this square.

Bloemenmarkt
The national monument of the Dutch Reformed Church, dating from 1810, is located on Bloemenmarkt (meaning flower market, which used to be called pig market). To its right, there is the Fractiehuis, with the clog hole beside the front door where people used to clean their clogs before going in.

St. Jan church
The old Raadhuis and the Roman Catholic St. Jan church, devoted to St. John the Baptist, patron of the city of Roosendaal, are located in the heart of the city. The building dates from 1839. In 1268 there was a chapel on this spot, founded by the Norbertines of the Abbey of Tongerlo.

Abbey of Tongerlo
The relations between Roosendaal and the Norbertine abbey are centuries-old (around 1130). For more than eight centuries the priests of the Abbey of Tongerlo have been responsible for the spiritual care of the Roman Catholic community of the St. Jan church of Roosendaal. In 1157 the pope granted the abbey the authority to appoint parish priests. This authority was invoked until the 20th century. The last Norbertine parish priest died in 1979. The country estate of Tongerlo is located in the part of Belgium called Kempen. A bookshop, a museum, and a printing office are currently established in the abbey.

The Tongerlohuis
This former pastorate with its surrounding moat, remarkable trees and access by way of the bridge, dates from 1762. This national monument is currently fitted out as a museum for the archaeological circle “De Ghulden Roos”.
