Rijsbergen

The name "Rijsbergen" was given to the building in 1757 by the owners of the island, the "Stachouwer" family (in those days the "Lords of the island") when they built it as their home in that year. In that period the old village "Westerburen" was washed away by the sea and the current village was extended eastwards.

Also the subsequent owners of the island (the Dutch lawyer and businessman J.E. Banck and the German counts Von Bernstorff) have used the house as their "second home". The last German count, Bechtold Eugen van Bernstorff, was expropriated by the Dutch state in 1945 after which island and house went over in Dutch hands.

"Rijsbergen" in present times:
Today, the monumental front and the beautiful location are still intact. The remainder of the building has been changed and modernized over time. Unfortunately, of the old interior nothing remains. In the main building the reception/house bar, the breakfast rooms and -on the 1st floor- several rooms are located.

Behind the main building, a new wing constructed in 1998 houses the majority of the double rooms (on the ground floor).

Rijsbergen is a small hotel (on a"Rijsbergen" is a small hotel (on a "bed & breakfast" basis) established in a historic building with a south-facing terrace and surrounded by a tree-lined lawn. The building is situated on the eastern edge of the village (a 5-minute walk from the village center). The distance to the beach is about 2 kilometers (1 1/4 mile).

We dispose over 14 double rooms, 2 rooms for four persons, 1 room for three persons and 1 one person room. All rooms have their own shower & toilet. Most double rooms are situated on the ground floor (in a new wing built in 1998). In addition use can be made of two livings rooms and -during the opening hours- of the house bar. Bookings for Friday, Saturday and in holiday periods must be for a minimum of 2 nights (Easter, Whitsuntide, Ascension Day minimum of 3 nights).
Unfortunately pets are not welcome. In the building smoking is not permitted. For groups of up to 40 people there is, outside the holiday period, the possibility to rent the entire building.

Rijsbergen does not have restaurant facilities, merely breakfast and -on request- lunchpackages are being served. Within a short distance one can find -inside and outside- of the village several restaurants for lunch and dinner. We have a small house bar which serves drinks (not allowed to take your own alcoholical beverages).
