Since 1989, Schiermonnikoog has been a national park, which is a special natural region that must be well protected.
Nature is there for all of us, so only a few areas of Schiermonnikoog are closed to public access. There are many different ways to explore the island and enjoy the splendid natural environment. You can look at the flowers in the dunes, feel the wind in your hair on the beach, hear the birds on the salt marsh, savour the salty taste of glasswort, or inhale the odour of the tidal flats.
