History of Uithoorn

The invasion of the French troops in 1672 came to the front line to Uithoorn. There reinforcements were raised and the current state Schans still recalls. During the Batavian Republic were Thamen and Uithoorn merged into a town Uithoorn. Economic development remained limited, it came in the middle of the nineteenth century changed by the advent of any (including chemical) industry. The reclamation of a number of large puddles yielded at the end of the nineteenth century additional farmland. Particularly in De Kwakel was much horticulture.
From about 1885 were around Uithoorn various fortifications of the Defence of Amsterdam created. In 1915 Uithoorn was on the railway system of the Haarlemmermeersporen connected. The construction of the provincial road Haarlem - Hilversum (the current N 201) was a severing of Uithoorn. About the Amstel was a larger bridge built (the current Princess Irenebrug), which on Sept. 2, 1939, the day after the outbreak of the Second World War, was put into use.
During the Second World War, by Mayor CMA Koot and urban prof H. Wieger Bruin an outline for a structural plan for the post-war development, which structure in the years'50 and'60 is broadly. Vanag 1948, the district Thamerdal built from about 1960 the district Zijdelwaard, from the 1972 quarter Legmeer, all north of the N 201. From 1985 was also to the south of the N 201 built in the districts Meerwijk-Meerwijk West and East. In 1991, a new shopping center built at the Amstelplein, at the expense of a large part of the original buildings. This left only a few houses on the Schans.
At the end of the twentieth century homes were built around the bus station (moved). Part of the since mid-1950 are no longer used for passenger old railway line (Aalsmeer - Mijdrecht) was converted into a bus lane, with the Amstel was crossing with the old railway bridge. From the bus station in Uithoorn until just before Mijdrecht, the public transport thus have a free bus lane, which is only in a direction of travel (always opposed to the file) is used. At the beginning of the 21st century homes were built on the former site of the local football Legmeervogels, who got the decision on a new sports park. Around this sports park in 2007 also houses were built.
One topic that the feelings of local politics already involved decades, the crowds on the N 201 and the plans for diversion, outside the urban area of Uithoorn. Already in 1957, the Second Letter to the Planning such a rearrangement projected. Since then, the urban area of Uithoorn a "bottleneck" in this connection showed, with a daily long traffic jams as a result. Arguments against diversion were (and are) the material costs, which in 2003 were estimated at around 700 million euros (including because of the new bridges over the Ringvaart the Haarlemmermeerpolder at Aalsmeer and over the river north of Uithoorn / Amstelhoek) and the deterioration of the open countryside north of Uithoorn. Until rearrangement has been decided. In late 2007, the municipal politics a lively debate on the proposal, after the diversion, the Princess Irenebrug be closed for cars.
