Where all other islands are oriented to the west-side, Vlieland is oriented to the east-side. You can tell by the the fact that the village and the docks are situated westly while on Vlieland this is the other way around. The enormous sand supply of the Vliehors together with the predominantly western winds, formed the highest sand dunes of the Wadden islands -40 meters high- called the 'Vuurboetsduin'. On top of it the light house is situated.
