The oldest village of Zuid-Beveland is Wemeldinge which dates back to the 11th century AD when it grew up round three refuge mounds. Today, only one of these refuge mounds remains. You can find it near the Dutch Reformed church, just outside the village centre. The village is situated on the Eastern Scheldt and the canal through Zuid-Beveland. Wemeldinge is an ideal starting-point for water sports enthusiasts, particularly those who enjoy diving, sailing and angling. The yacht harbour with docking for those on tour has an open access to the Eastern Scheldt.
