The village Wezup, where the Guesthouse the Kunsthuis Interlokaal is situated, has about 220 inhabitants and it is one of the ash-villages in this region.
The name Wezup is a combination of the old words for meadow and brook. This indicates that it is a favourable region for mixed farming. The village has remained quiet and small. For the daily shopping people go to the nearby Zweeloo (distance 2 kilometres).
The two large forests of Gees and Zweeloo and the white sand of the Balinger and Mantingerzand make this area incredibly fascinating.
Due to the variety of soils the flora and fauna is extremely varied. The big network of cycle tracks and small roads of clinkers with a green film of moss and weed takes you through silent scenic areas.

The old villages have retained their characteristic beauty very well and people have been very careful about their heritage. The thatched roofs of the farmhouses have a magnificent structure and they span low walls widely.
